Process is a program under execution which competes for the CPU time and other resources generally program exist on disk or a paper it is compiled but it does not compete for CPU time but whenever a user wants to execute a program it will be loaded in that  it becomes a process .

The number of processes running simultaneously competing for CPU is called degree of multiprogramming
