Mabel felt that we were all like flies trying to climb over the edge of a plate, some crawling slowly with their wings stuck together. To make the other people at the party look insignificant and unimportant, she tried hard to portray them as poor, struggling flies trying to get out of or into something.

However, her inferiority complex was so strong that she ended up seeing herself as just a fly trying to get out of a plate. She saw the others as dragonflies, butterflies, beautiful insects, dancing, fluttering and lightly hopping.
